What is Positive Psychology?

So, what exactly is Positive Psychology and how does it relate to you?


Let's begin with a little history. Back in 1958, a psychologist named Harry Harlow dropped a truth bomb on mainstream psychology. He declared that psychologists had missed the mark when it came to understanding love and affection. Harlow's words were a wake-up call, revealing the limitations of traditional psychology in exploring the depths of human emotions.


Fast forward to today, where Positive Psychology takes center stage as a game-changer in how we view our well-being. It's all about diving deep into the positive aspects of the human experience and unleashing our inner potential.


But let's set the record straight. Positive Psychology isn't about putting on a fake smile 24/7 or pretending life is all rainbows and unicorns. That's neither realistic nor healthy. It's not some fluffy self-help approach or a mere exercise in positive thinking. Positive Psychology is a scientific field rooted in rigorous research and academic expertise.


Here's the scoop: Positive Psychology invites us to shift our focus from solely fixing what's wrong with us to embracing what's right within us. It's about cultivating positive emotions, building character strengths, and discovering meaningful experiences. It's a holistic approach that moves beyond survival to foster genuine thriving.


Now, don't get me wrong. Negative emotions and life's challenges are part of the human experience, and Positive Psychology doesn't ignore them.
