The Body Remembers: Anxiety, the Nervous System, and Healing

Anxiety is not only experienced in the mind- it also lives in the body.
One thing I continue learning through my training is how often the nervous system carries stress before we fully put words to it. Tightness in the chest, restlessness, fatigue, and shallow breathing can be early signals from the body. In many ways, the body speaks before the mind understands.
This is part of why I’m drawn to mind-body practices like yoga. Slow breathing, gentle movement, and body awareness can help signal safety to the nervous system, supporting regulation, clarity, and emotional balance.
Healing is not only cognitive- it is also physiological, emotional, and deeply human.
A Simple Regulation Practice: Box Breathing
You might try this brief practice:
Inhale — 4
Hold — 4
Exhale — 4
Hold — 4
Repeat for 1–2 minutes, allowing the breath to slow naturally.
Slow breathing can help signal safety to the body and nervous system.
With Love,
Connie
